You guys, I want to introduce you to my new favorite appetizer in the whole wide world: Garlic and Black Radish Crostinis. These amazing little crostini bites start with fresh baguette slices from our local Mon Delice French bakery, topped with a dollop of homemade garlic mayo and cream cheese spread, then finished with a stack of spicy black radishes and garlic chives. Seriously, I dare you to eat just one!
Recently, Green Flamingo Organics introduced me to a completely new radish variety, the black radish. Since I am totally on a radish kick lately, I was so excited to pick up a bunch of these beauties and give them a try!
WHAT IS A BLACK RADISH?
A black radish, or black Spanish radish, are typically harvested in late winter or early spring. They tend to grow much bigger, about 3-4 times larger than their cousin the spring radish and have a nice spicy flavor. They can be sauteed, braised, added to soups or sliced and eaten raw paired with a dip, which is my new favorite way to serve them alongside crostinis. Black radishes provide quite a bit of vitamin C, A, B, E, potassium, magnesium, and iron. They are known for their ability to fight off infection, detox the liver and may even help balance out thyroid hormones! Keep your radishes fresh by wrapping them in plastic and storing in the fridge for up to two weeks.
Here are 4 reasons why you need Garlic and Black Radish Crostinis in your life:
1) You know that person that brings crostinis or a bread-based appetizer to a party and everyone immediately has light in their eyes and follows said appetizer to its prize-winning spot on the party table? Be the person that puts the light in their eyes.
2) Aside from the fact that these crostinis are made from a fresh baked french baguette, they are also smothered in an amazing garlic and cream cheese chive dip that is literally one of the best things on this planet. I want to eat it – and maybe have – by the spoonful. Any leftover dip is also amazing on a piece of toast, topped with a fried egg. #currentlydrooling.
3) This can easily be made vegan! Just change out one or two ingredients and impress you dairy-free friends without compromising taste.
4) Black radishes tend to be spicy, so the creamy dip and bread base help balance out the heat. You end up with a mouthful of awesome flavor. And then another. And then another. Just walk away from the table because these crostinis now own you.
Here is how to make Garlic and Black Radish Crostinis:
1) Chop green onions and thinly slice black radishes, cutting larger slices into halves.
2) Mix green onion, cream cheese and garlic mayo in a bowl until creamy.
3) Slice baguette into approx 20, 1.5 inch slices. By turning it upside down, you can cut through slices without having the bread tear apart. I also recommend using a bread knife like this SERRATED BREAD KNIFE. If toasting, place in a preheated oven of 400 until golden brown and toasted, typically less than 10 minutes. If serving fresh, skip oven step.
4) Add 1-2 tbsp garlic dip on crostinis, and top with one to two pieces black radish.
5) Top with garlic chives and fresh cracked black pepper if desired.
If you are running out of time, or run into a baguette emergency (that’s a real thing #baguetteturnsintoarock) you can also make this quickly into a platter, keeping all parts separate until people assemble them. Want some super cute teapot spoons too?! Check them out HERE!
